Using Flash Drives
In this day and age of electronics, we find that we need to have our data, whether it is Word files, PowerPoint files, pictures, or other types of files, at our fingertips. Finding the best way to make files portable is necessary in our computer based world. Fortunately, we now have flash drives, some of which have the storage capacity of a high priced computer. The best news is that using flash drives is safe, easy and affordable.
It seems the easiest way to provide data that is both protable and safe is to us a flash drive or thumb drive. The old days of the floppy and CDs are finally over. Most computers today no longer even have a floppy disk drive; therefore, saving data on a floppy may or may not help you take files from one computer to another. Also, flash drives are not nearly as easy to corrupt. The old floppy drives often malfunctioned due to scratches, dust, or the dreaded magnet. Just think. You have worked on a paper or project for weeks. On the due day, you proudly take you floppy to a printer for printing. Alas. Nothing is on the floppy disk. What happened? After you are told the magnet on your key ring destroyed your floppy, you realize that you have to start from scratch because the floppy was your only copy.
There are also problems inherent with CDs. They are not impervious to dust or scratches. Another problem is that CDs are often difficult to use and to make sure the transfer of data is complete. Again the data you thought you had is simply not where it should be.
One of the major reasons flash drives or thumb drives have taken over the data storage market is that they are so user friendly. Anyone can use a flash drive on most any computer even if he/she has little or no training. All the user has to do is connect the flash drive to the USB port on a computer. Most new computers have USB ports in the front of the computer which makes using the flash drives even easier. If your computer doesn’t have enough USB ports to support using flash drives, you can buy a very inexpensive hub where you can easily attach you flash drive.
What about the shelf life of a flash drive? Do they last forever? The answer is no, of course. But most inexpensive flash drives can be used for at least several hundred thousand uses before it needs to be replaces. Think about how much money you actually saved by using flash drives. They can be used over and over again. There have even been reports that most flash drives can survive a wash in the washing machine. After the flash drive is completely dry, try using the flash drive and see what happens.
The use of flash drives or thumb drives has made the world of computers completely portable. You can work anywhere or any computer and be sure that the flash drive you are using will do its job quickly and accurately. Throw away the floppies and the CDs and start using flash drives.
