Flash Thumb Drives

What in the world is a flash thumb drive? Actually this is just another name for the flash drive. Other names are a stick, a removable drive, or that little do hickey. The name flash thumb drive got its name from the fact that this wonderful pieces of technology is about the size of a thumb.

The earliest flash drives were about the size of the thumb. Now they are even smaller so the name flash thumb drive is going out of fashion. In fact every time you shop for a drive, they seem to get smaller and smaller but with more storage capacity.

The first flash thumb drives had what seemed to be a huge amount of storage capacity. The first ones were 256 mg which seemed huge. Then the flash thumb drives had a huge storage capacity leap. They were a little more expensive than the first ones but were still affordable. These flash drives had a whopping 512 mg capacity. That’s more storage capacity than some of the first computers. Computer users, especially who go on the band wagon in the early days, were blown away with that kind of data capacity.

Because we are such a mobile society, the flash thumb drive has become a must have piece of technology. Instead of dragging around the laptop, we can take our flash drive with us and use it on other computers. Professionals who need to make presentations can express their technology needs before the presentation so that everything can be already set up before they enter the boardroom. All they need to bring is the flash thumb drive which ways next to nothing but has the needed storage capacity for the presentation.

Then when everyone was still fascinated with the 512 mg capacity thumb drives, here comes the 1 GB drive. It was smaller and cheaper than the earliest flash thumb drives. At this point everyone was getting on the flash drive bandwagon. Hating floppies and CDs because saving data on them was unreliable and sometimes painful because of lost data, more and more people began buying this precious little drives. The flash drive became the best thing for computer users since the computer was first available.

Most people do not have only one flash drive, they have several. Some people have five or six or even more. Each flash drive has a different use. Some flash drives are the vacation flash drives. Vacationers can save their pictures on these very reliable drives so that they don’t overfill their digital cameras. After the vacation rather than bringing hard copies of your pictures, you can pass around your flash drive so that everyone can enjoy your priceless photos.

Backing up data is such an important part of working with computers. A rule of thumb is that you should figure out how long it would take you to re-do the work and let that number help you to decide whether or not to back-up your work. A good, secure flash thumb drive makes the perfect back-up for important files and priceless pictures. Whatever reason you use the flash thumb drive, you will always be glad that you did. What are you waiting for? If you don’t have one, order one today. You don’t even have to leave home; you can probably buy one on this page.
